Think Eternity!

Think Eternity

Just a thought...

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end." Ecclesiastes 3: 11

Only God can know the beginning of all things. The opening words of Scripture read, "In the beginning God created..." It was the beginning of time (before that, there was only eternity) and space (the world and the universe we have come to know--before that, we can't even imagine). The concept of eternity is incomprehensible because we can not reach beyond time. God is from eternity.

The telescopes reveal to us the vastness of God's creation. The brightest star in the sky is Sirius, nine light years distant from earth. We speak of something that is about an hour's drive or a twenty minute walk. Astronomers measure distance by a light-year. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. When multiplied by the number of seconds in a year, Sirus would be about 54,000,000,000 miles from this earth. Yet there is much more beyond that. The farthest light visible on earth is the Spiral Andromeda--1,500,000 light years away. But even these stars are not the end because others exist but are not distinguishable as individual stars. They are seen as great white clouds (hence, Milky Way).

The microscopes reveal to us infinitude of smallness in God's creation. Scientists succeeded in breaking down matter to the atom (long thought to be the last ultimate unit). A teaspoonful of water contains a million billion trillion atoms--but we can't comprehend what that means. Yet atoms are composed of still smaller parts which form a microscopic universe.

Discovering the world around us (large and small) reveals to us the greatness of God. David was right when he said, "When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor." Psalm 8: 3-5
